1. Open the Train tab — the dumbbell in the middle of the dock. It’s the screen the app opens on. 2. Tap "New Routine" and give it a name. 3. Add exercises from the 449-exercise library. 4. Tap any added exercise to set Target Reps (e.g. 8–12) and Rest Interval (e.g. 90s).
A split organizes your routines across the week (Push/Pull/Legs, Upper/Lower, and so on). 1. On the Train tab, find "My Splits". 2. Tap "New Split" — or "Explore" to start from one of the 10 built-in splits, containing 41 routines. 3. Assign routines to days of the week. 4. Star (★) a split to make it your active default, so the app knows what you’re training today.
1. Tap "Start Workout" on any routine on the Train tab. 2. For each set, enter Weight and Reps, and how hard it felt — RPE or RIR, whichever you chose in Settings. 3. The rest timer starts on its own as soon as you complete a set. 4. Tap "Finish Workout" to save the session; it lands in the History tab.
Supersets: perform two exercises back-to-back. Tap the Link (🔗) icon on an exercise or choose "Link with Next" from its options menu. Drop sets: perform a set to failure, drop the weight, and continue. Tap "Add Drop Set" from the options menu on any set row.
Go to the Profile tab → Body Tracker. Log your bodyweight (updates your charts automatically) and add progress photos to see the change the scale does not show.
Each exercise is logged one of five ways: • Strength (Weight & Reps): standard lifting (Bench Press, Squat). • Bodyweight / Weighted / Assisted Bodyweight: for calisthenics (Pull Ups) — tracks reps and optional added weight. • Duration / Weighted Duration: for cardio or planks. • Other: acts as a strength set, labeled "Other".
Use this for exercises where you lift your own body (Dips, Pull Ups). The "Weight" field is what you add on top — a belt, a dumbbell between the feet. Leave it at 0 for bodyweight-only sets and the total load is worked out from the bodyweight in your profile.
1. Go to Profile → Exercises. 2. Tap the exercise you want to change. 3. Tap "Edit" or the Settings icon. 4. Select "Tracking Type" and choose the correct mode.
1. Go to Profile → Exercises. 2. Find the exercise in the list. 3. Tap the red Trash icon next to it. Note: built-in exercises can’t be deleted, only hidden.
• 1RM (One Rep Max): estimates your maximum strength from your best set each day. • Volume Load: total weight lifted (Sets × Reps × Weight) — great for tracking work capacity. • Consistency: a visual heat map of your workout frequency.
Gym Journal uses the Epley formula: 1RM = Weight × (1 + Reps/30). It estimates your max without asking you to fail a single every session.
Volume is a primary driver of hypertrophy (muscle growth). If your total volume increases over weeks (progressive overload), you're likely building muscle — even if the weight on the bar stays the same.
Tap "Generate with AI" on the Train tab, or from inside the Routines Library. The wizard asks for your goal, the equipment you actually have, your experience and how many days a week you train, then drafts a routine or a full multi-day split. It needs an account and it’s a Pro feature — free accounts get one generation to try it, Pro gets 40 a month. Whatever it produces is a normal routine you can edit, so treat it as a first draft rather than a prescription.
Yes. Once generated, you can swap exercises, adjust rep ranges, and modify rest timers — just like a manual routine.
The Hall of Fame ranks lifters on workouts, volume, PRs, streak and hours — you can sort by whichever board you want to climb. Log accurately and it takes care of itself. Your strength tier is a separate thing: it comes from your lifts measured against strength standards for your bodyweight, not from how much you post.
Open any custom routine and tap the Share icon to publish it to the Community Discovery Library for others to import.
Whichever you already think in — Settings → Workout Settings → Effort Scale switches between them and nothing you’ve logged changes. RPE rates how hard a set felt, 1 to 10. RIR counts the reps you had left in the tank. They’re the same scale read from opposite ends: RIR 2 is the same set as RPE 8.
Yes — Settings → Weight Unit. It converts what is already logged for display; your recorded sets aren’t rewritten, so you can switch back at any time without losing precision.
Yes. Solo mode is the default — open the app and start logging, no sign-up. Everything is stored on your device. What you give up without an account: cloud backup, sync between devices, the Gym Bros feed, leaderboards, and the AI Coach. You can link an account later from Settings and your existing history comes with you.
On iPhone, yes, and it’s off until you turn it on in Settings → Sync with Apple Health. When enabled it reads your latest weight, height, body-fat percentage and dietary energy so your profile stays current, and writes workouts you complete in Gym Journal back to Health. It never reads medical records. Revoke it anytime in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health.
Settings → Workout Settings → Keep Screen On. It holds the display awake while a session is running and releases it as soon as you finish, so it won’t drain your battery in your pocket afterwards.
Settings → Public Account controls it. With it off, other lifters can’t open your profile, your training stats, or the routines you’ve shared. You can still log, and you still appear nowhere you haven’t agreed to.
Settings → Language. Gym Journal ships in 22 languages across 25 regional variants, including separate options for US and UK English, Spain and Latin American Spanish, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
Tap the ⋯ menu on any post or profile to report or block. Blocked accounts disappear from your feed and can’t see your profile; manage the list under Settings → Blocked Users. Reports are reviewed by the developer.
Choose Forgot password on the sign-in screen, enter your email, and enter the code from the newest reset email in the app. Then choose a new password. If you request another code, use the newest one; check your spam folder if the email is missing.
Yes. Settings → Workout Settings → Previous Workout Values lets you choose any workout or only the same routine. These are the gray values shown beside your current sets.
Enable Inline Timer in Settings → Workout Settings. Timed exercises get a start button on each set, so you can record the duration in the row.
Free shows the last 30 days. Pro also offers 90 days, six months, twelve months and all time. Your History still lists all workouts on either plan.
It starts on its own after each set and keeps running when you leave the app, so you can put the phone down. On iPhone it also appears as a Live Activity on your Lock Screen, which means you can check the countdown without unlocking anything.
Open a plate-loaded set’s ⋮ menu and choose Plate Calculator. Enable it under Settings → Workout Settings if it is hidden. It uses your bar weight and standard kg or lb plate sizes. Add or remove plates, then save the displayed total back to the set.
No. The warm-up generator builds up to three percentage-based sets from your working weight for that exercise. They’re tagged as Warm-Up, so they never pollute your volume totals or your PRs.
Create one from the trophy icon in the Community tab and pick what it’s scored on: Volume, Workouts, Hours, Sets or PRs. Invite your gym bros, set the window, and standings update as everyone logs.
Seven of them, from Iron up through Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond and Titan to GOAT. Your tier is computed from your lifts against strength standards for your bodyweight, so it moves as you get stronger rather than as you log more.
30 badges across six categories — volume, sessions, PRs, streak, duration and grit — each with five tiers you climb. Volume badges, for example, unlock at 10, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 tons lifted. They read your lifetime totals, so they never reset.
You submit one photo and get back a visualization of where consistent training could take your physique. It’s a fitness estimate, not a medical or guaranteed result, and it’s 18+. Photo processing uses an external AI service. Review the in-app data-use notice and Privacy Policy before uploading. Pro includes 4 projections a month.
Yes, by default. Progress photos live in your Body Tracker and aren’t posted anywhere unless you deliberately share them. The Timelapse export stitches them into a video that stays on your device until you choose to do something with it.
Pro adds unlimited routines and splits, Smart Progression, advanced analytics and history, more AI Coach generations, progress photos and timelapse tools, video posts, and CSV export. Cloud sync, the Gym Bros feed and Hall of Fame are included with a free account. See the Pricing page for the full comparison.
1. Subscriptions (Monthly/Yearly): recurring payments that auto-renew. 2. Lifetime Access: a single one-time payment for permanent access to all current Pro features.
Manage subscriptions through the store where you purchased them. iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Gym Journal. Android: Google Play → Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Gym Journal. Cancel there to stop the next renewal. Access continues through the current paid period.
For an App Store purchase, request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. For Google Play, follow its refund request process at support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2479637. Eligibility depends on the store and purchase. Email me if you need help finding the purchase.
Open any Pro upgrade screen and tap "Restore Purchases" at the bottom — that’s the only place that talks to the store. Make sure you’re signed into the same store account you bought it with: the same Apple ID on iPhone, or the same Google account on Android. A purchase made on one store can’t be restored on the other. Note that the "Restore" button under Settings → Account & Data is a different thing — it restores a backup of your workout data, not your subscription.
On iPhone: 1. Check Screen Time restrictions: Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy → iTunes & App Store. 2. Check your internet connection. 3. Make sure your App Store payment method is valid and not expired. On Android: 1. Check for parental controls in Google Play → Profile → Settings → Family. 2. Check your internet connection. 3. Confirm the payment method under Google Play → Profile → Payments & subscriptions is valid.
iOS: 1. Settings → Sound & Haptics — make sure "Ringer and Alerts" volume is up. 2. Settings → Notifications → Gym Journal — make sure "Sounds" is ON. 3. Make sure the physical silent switch is OFF.
When you're signed in, your workouts, routines, and progress sync automatically to secure cloud storage and across your devices. In Solo mode, data stays on your device.
If you're signed in, your data is safely synced to the cloud and restored when you log back in. Check that your latest data has synced before signing out or switching devices.
